Temperature-controlled delivery

Delivery of fresh produce by bicycle, using passive or active refrigeration, has proved its worth.
Many players, such as STEF and Groupe Delanchy,
have integrated cyclelogistics into their business models.

FlexiModal's versatile solutions enable you to vary your flows for greater efficiency, using the same vehicle.

Choose a vehicle (scooter or trailer) and link it to one or more modules corresponding to your flows.

Concrete Use Cases

Ayopa by Delanchy : "Mini-containerization” to optimize Cold Deliveries

Ayopa, acquired by the Delanchy refrigeration group, delivers fresh produce to Parisian restaurants from its refrigerated warehouse in Rungis, where the goods are loaded into micro-containers dropped off by truck in the city center. From the center, they are loaded directly onto trailers hitched to the bikes and set off on their rounds, without opening or breaking the load.

A Vélo 37 : the expert in local service

Adrien and his team deliver all types of goods in Tours. Thanks to its partnership with Frais Chez Toi, A Vélo 37 delivers 500 to 600kg of temperature-controlled goods for STEF every day. With a COLD & CO cold room and an Olivo box, A Vélo 37 monitors the cold chain “with the same requirements as the carriers”.

Food delivery by bike

Temperature and temperature control

When transporting food or pharmaceutical products, temperature monitoring is essential. Monitoring the cold chain ensures the safety of the foodstuffs being transported.

For foodstuffs, temperatures are as follows (in France) :
Fresh  : between +2°C and +4°C
Frozen : -18°C

In the pharmacy, the required temperatures were between +2°C and +8°C for refrigerated products, and +15/+25°C for products that should remain at room temperature, according to the recommendations of the French pharmacists' association.

To monitor temperatures, regular readings (5 to 10 minutes) are required. Built-in sensors enable information to be fed back directly into your ETI to pinpoint any cold excursion (e.g. : SOPAC).

Transport modes

For temperature-controlled transport, several cold maintenance methods can be used: active cold and passive cold.

Where a chiller is needed to manage active cooling, passive cooling is achieved using either eutectic plates or cryogenic cooling.

Thermal and electric trucks and transport vehicles operate actively.

The evolution of urban constraints and needs has opened the doors to temperature-controlled transport by bike. With regulations limiting the maximum power of a bicycle to 250W, passive cooling comes into play..

Compliance with standards

The transport of heat-sensitive products is governed by standards. The GDPs (Good Distribution Practices) govern the transport and storage of heat-sensitive healthcare products, and standard EN13486 governs the recording of temperatures during the transport of refrigerated, frozen and deep-frozen foodstuffs.

Transporting perishable goods requires compliance with ATP regulations. ATP is the Agreement on the International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs. It regulates: the maintenance of product temperature until delivery, and the choice of container which must comply with ATP certification. This ensures the thermal insulation and refrigeration required to maintain the cold chain of the foodstuffs concerned.

Equipment for delivering cold by bike

To deliver heat-sensitive foodstuffs, it's essential to be equipped with ATP-certified hardware solutions.

On a bike, and therefore in passive cold, it is essential to be equipped with eutectic plates, previously kept cold at -24°C in a suitable freezer. These plates are then inserted into the isothermal container used for transport.

Depending on requirements, two Lift-compatible solutions are available:
CarryTemp XL9 by COLD & CO : 880L, 138kg payload, 9 standard crates, 5 eutectic plates
- Roll O'City 500 by Olivo : 515L , 138kg payload, europallet format, 2 eutectic plates TOP 900

Cold Storage in the Logistics Hub: essential?

When it comes to delivering fresh produce, the primary concern of cyclelogisticians is the creation of a cold storage space. Expensive, technical and taking up a considerable amount of valuable logistical space, a cold room is not an obligation.

Thanks to containerization and passive cooling, you can prepare containers upstream, in the initial carrier's refrigerated hub, before dropping them off in the city, at the delivery service provider's hub, who will be able to lift the container from the ground with Lift solutions for immediate delivery, without any cold excursion, additional sorting or urban cold storage

If your organization does not allow you to prepare tours in advance, it is also possible to transport foodstuffs in large-volume isothermal roll containers, which act as mini-cold rooms in the hub. This approach ensures the ability to prepare shared tours in the hub, while preserving the hub's surface area and versatility..

Containerization applied to Cold Deliveries

Containerization means preparing the loading of delivery containers upstream of the city, by tour and/or catchment area, before massifying their approach to the city to enable another mode of transport to take over, in multimodal logistics. In this way, at the end of a round, a full container can simply be exchanged for an empty one, with no additional sorting and no loss of time, for maximum efficiency and to ensure the profitability of the model.

In the refrigeration sector, this containerization not only limits load breakage, but also limits cold excursions for a guaranteed cold chain.
